Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

Program Objective: soil and water conservation

Type of Assistance Available: cost share and incentive payments

Eligibility/Non-eligibility: private land owners engaged in livestock or agricultural production as defined by Farm Service Agency

Amounts Available: $10,000 per person per year; $50,000 per person for the length of the contract

Matching Requirements: Up to 50%; Up to 75 % in high priority areas

Comments: The ability of timber farmers to appy for money in the past has been questionable; however, information indicates this program will receive more funding than in the past with the passage of the new farm bill in October of 2002, and there are indications that private forest landowners will become clearly eligible.

Restrictions: all activities must be carried out according to a conservation plan developed with assistance from NRCS; enter into contract to maintain activities for 5-10 years

What can the funds be used for: conservation practices to improve and maintain the health of natural resources in the area; tree planting, animal waste management facilities, terraces, filter strips, and permanent wildlife habitat
